How to get handfasted

How I did it: When my husband proposed and we started the process of planning the wedding we were faced with the pants option of a registry office for the legal part of the ceremony as we are both pagan. We planned to have the registry office as a quick 'get the legal bit out the way' ceremony and then have a non-legal handfasting and reception but this just didn't sit with me at all. We both wanted the ceremony to be the important part.
A couple from my coven had been handfasted in Scotland the year before as it is a legal ceremony there (which not everybody knows) so this seemed the best option for us as well. There also fell in love with Orkney (where they married) and had moved there and Helen (my friend) had become the official pagan celebrant for the island so the solution seemed simple. Helen and Mark agreed to handfast us which was great. The only problem was that we live in Manchester and most of our relatives live down south (Portsmouth and Bristol) so we ended up deciding that it would only be the two of us that travelled to Orkney which actually ended up making it special in a different way.
We had our Handfasting on the 21st of September at the ring of Brodgar in Orkney and then repeated the ceremony down south for friends and relatives with a reception after on the 25th of september. We ended up driving 3000 mile in 2 weeks but it was so worth it. Best wedding adventure ever.
Lessons & tips: Don't be afraid to plan something crazy and complicated but do plan it all out. Make sure it's what you want, don't compromise on the things important to you.
