How I did it: I started a three year Japanese language course as part of my undergraduate degree in Animation. I found it easier to master the grammar by researching the culture. The way we express ourselves in the West is very different to how the Japanese do. Humility is the name of the game when conversing with strangers, elders and people with more authority than you. A simple question like, How are you doing? Could be taken as a serious enquiry about one's health and as a result is and should not said as casually as we are used to.
