How I did it: I used to have a job where I was the extended campus financial aid counselor for a regional state university.  I drove approx 370 miles per week, every week, for 3 years.  Then one of the girls in my office decided to not come back to work when her maternity leave was up.  I applied for her position, got it, and came in off the road.  I had to train my replacement and be on-call for her questions once she went on the road, but totally worth it.  I get to spend SOOO much more time with my husband and son.

Lessons & tips: Look for a transfer off the road within your current company or department.  People are always moving away or choosing to become stay-at-home moms and leaving perfectly good, commute-free positions up for the grabbing.

Resources: I watched my university's human resources page and listened to grapevine rumors of positions opening up.
