How I did it: I had been growing my hair out for nearly 3 years for this very purpose. When I sat down in that chair, though, and she hacked off my ponytail, I couldn't help but feel a little sad, like I was losing a part of me. The funny thing? I didn't even like having long hair; growing it out truly was a labor of love. I ended up donating 12.5 inches.

Lessons & tips: take good care of your hair and try to resist dying it. I just think it's nice to give the best hair possible.
