How to make art everyday
"don't be afraid! make that first mark! "
How I did it:
one of the biggest things that kept me from making art was thinking that i wasn't good enough. so many doubts in my mind, comparing myself to others, being way too harsh on myself. it all held me back and left me with nothing but a blank page! i had to learn that not everything will be perfect. sometimes the drawing won't turn out the way i like it to! it happens to everybody. the book "art & fear" is an excellent resource (go read it!).
i keep a sketchbook and some pens in my bag. whenever i am waiting around somewhere i can doodle or take notes. sometimes i will continue the drawing at home and it will lead to something bigger.
i started a tumblr where i put all my inspiration. all the art, music, videos, and quotes i like i will usually post it there. then i can go back later and have an endless stream of good stuff!
i make it a point to really notice what is around me. the people, the environment, the sounds and smells, everything. i can get inspiration from the pattern on someone's shirt or from the shape of the leaves on the ground. inspiration is everywhere!
i also made a list of projects and websites with open submissions. these are fun to participate in and it can be a challenge to think of something to fit the theme/parameters. a few are:
- the hello project: doodle some form of hello greeting on a post-it
- peculiar bliss: contribute to their magazine (themed)
- art house co-op: they have several projects open. a big one is the sketchbook project which i am participating in this year. they have writing and photography projects too.
i took some sculpture, photography and design classes. it was fun to try different media. helps a lot with developing a critical eye, knowing what works and what doesn't, and learning to understand what makes something visually interesting.
Lessons & tips:
- carry a sketchbook and pencil / camera with you all the time
- participate in a challenge such as project 365 or a 30 day drawing challenge
- get inspired. browse artist websites, tumblr, flickr
- keep learning! take a figure drawing workshop or sign up for photography lessons!
- try a new technique
- notice what is around you
