It was bittersweet. 
"I got it, and then had to give it up because I had to make more money in order to pay tuition... but otherwise, it was pretty cool."
How I did it: Persistence. I basically hounded the faculty until they gave up getting in my way. I called, emailed, visited their offices... and eventually, I got the position.
Lessons & tips: Don't give up on it. If you show up enough times, people will be compelled to give you a chance.
