"I wanted to donate my hair and thought maybe a few of my students would join me... 90 kids later, we raised 4 lbs of hair and $11,000 for cancer! WOOOOHOOO!"
How I did it: As a teacher, I started a campaign called, "DO Something...Get a New 'DO!" and spread the word at school, hoping to get maybe 10 kids to donate their hair with me. The kids started signing up and before I knew it, it got a life of its own! I called some professional stylists to volunteer to give us new "DOs." We had 16 stylists come to the school for the big cut on Oct 22, 2008. OVER 90 KIDS participated and we collected 4 lbs of hair for Pantene's Beautiful Lengths (min 8" but no dyes) and Locks of Love (min 10" but dyes allowed). We donated the $11,000 raised by our participants to cancer research. It was absolutely incredible!
Lessons & tips: Never underestimate the willingness of high school students to make a difference in the world.
