How to brew my own beer
"A bit of a mess, but a hell of a lot of fun for a Saturday afternoon. "
How I did it: I got the beginners beer making kit from Bader beer & wine out in Vancouver. It'll set you back about $100 but it is well worth it if you are going to be serious about brewing more than just one batch.
New years weekend I picked up all the ingredients for the beer I was going to make, an IPA. You can expect to pay about $40-50 per batch to make it. You'll get about 5 gallons of beer out of that.
I cooked everything up the next weekend while watching the seahawks beat the saints! It takes about 3-4 hours total for cooking it all up and cleaning up after. The most important thing here to remember is to have plenty of beer on hand to drink while you are brewing.
I then let it set out for the next 7-10 days to do it's thing and ferment up a little bit. And then this weekend I took on the task of bottling it all. You'll need about 2 cases of empty bottles for it. Be sure to remember and add a little more corn sugar before bottling so your bottles will have carbonation as well. (you can of course taste test it at this point while you are bottling but don't expect it to be ready just yet.)
Now you are playing the waiting games once more before you'll be ready to have the big party and invite everyone over to try your first draft. Give it another 1-4 weeks to do it's thing in the bottle.
And that's it, you've done it! Cheers!
Lessons & tips: Best lesson I learned from this round was to be sure and strain it well so you don't have a lot of settlement in the bottles.
