How to improve my math skills
How I did it: I did not take any math for 3 and a half years. I had a goal to test into Math 111 this fall--it is college algebra and the only math class I needed to graduate with my two year transfer degree. If I had to take additional math classes to reach that level I would not be able to graduate in the spring. I studied review sheets offered by my school's web site and studied a used math book I bought at a book store. When I did my initial placement test at Lane three years ago I did not pass the placement test for Math 111. But now, through studying and reviewing, I was able to test into the class. It has been challenging in some ways, but I am very excited to be continuing on. It is so satisfying to be able to meet a goal.
Lessons & tips: There are many helpful review sheets that can be found online. Another favorite of mine is used book stores. I was able to find one of my old high school math books there--now an older edition--for only $10. Using that book I could "retrace my steps." Do a few problems every day--some that you feel comfortable with, and others that are not as used to. Take your time working them out.
