How to exercise
How I did it: I started with doing something I actually enjoy, and that's walking. I hate running, so instead of trying to run 2 miles, I walked 2 miles on the treadmill. Because I'm walking it takes over twice as long than running a mile (given I could even run for 10 mintues straight) but it's the act that it didn't overwhelm me.
After over a month of running 2 miles at least 3 times a week, I started incorperation other things into my workout; 10 minutes of jumprope, 30 minutes on the eliptical. (I assigned 5 days out of my week to working out. I would try to workout all five days, but in case I missed a day it was still possible to work out at least 3 times out of the week)
Since starting in January I've also added vinyasa yoga into my routine and want to continue to do so because I genuinely enjoy it.
It really is about finding something you like, and like with anything else you're not familiar with. That can take trying different workouts and learning to appreciate and like certain workouts while finding ones you genuinely like. Like with new foods :P
I gave myself small goals I knew I could reach and continued foward from there. I also downloaded an app that reminded me of when to work out and kept track of what and how I worked out everyday.
Plus, it helps to have supportive people in your life :)
I've been out of it for a couple of weeks, but by now, I actually miss working out and know I'll be back at it. This is coming from someone who hated working out up until the end of last year!
Even though I've got a long way to go, and I still need to maintain a regular scheule, I feel as if I've come a long way, and I can say "I have exercised". I'll make a new goal of exercising regularly to help make sure I continue with my progress :)
Lessons & tips: Give yourself small goals and work up from there.
Find something you like, and if you don't, keep trying, chances are you'll find something.
Document your progress. Even if you don't notice much progress, it's neat and encouraging to see what you've actually done.
Resources: Cardio Trainer Android app. I'm sure there's an equivalent on the apple app store.
Workout equipment. I live at an apartment complex, so they had a gym.
Supportive friends and fiance :)
