How to be a film scholar
"Investigative."
How I did it: I took cinema courses at university. I picked up a "how to read films" textbook and learn about the conventions and what they mean: shot angles, frame depths, video vs. film and so on.
Lessons & tips: Some courses teach more about the history of film industries, some teach more about the social meaning of film, and some the aesthetics of film. Talk to the professor to find out what they focus on.
Be ready for lots of analysis.
