How I did it: I called my cellphone company and asked them to port our home number to my cellphone. This happened disturbingly quickly and with no questions asked from our home phone provider, who put a check in the mail reimbursing our remaining unused service.
I also moved almost all of our phone usage to Skype on an iPod Touch, brining our phone bills down 80%. I wrote more about it here:
