How to get promoted
How I did it: When I found out there were positions available, I immediately told my boss that I wanted one of those spots. He not only expressed his full faith in me, but he also gave me tips (specific to the role) that would help. I studied hard for my technical portion, and I practiced with my managers to prepare for the interview process that I'd have to go through. I also had a coworker who had gone through the same process, so I asked her for help too. My big lesson from this was learning that I can't do everything on my own (which I'm used to doing, and was very hard to give up for me because I've always been really independent) and that people *want* to help me. I obviously *qualified* on my own based on my performance, but there's nothing wrong with asking for help with the other parts, especially since I knew I wasn't the most technical person ever, nor the best person with interviews. I was really lucky to have such a great team to support me, because I felt like they all really wanted me to get this promotion too.
Lessons & tips: My biggest tip is to let your boss know what you want, and seek as much help from him/her as possible. I work with an amazing set of leaders who were able to provide me with paid time to study for my technical test and do mock interviews with me. All I had to do was ask them, and they fully supported me because they wanted me to be able to do it.
