How to grow a garden
"I built an elevated bed, filled it with soil, and planted vegetables inside."
How I did it: I decided that planting in an elevated bed would be easier than breaking topsoil in my back yard, I went to a hardware store and purchased screws and two 1'x8' and one 1'x4' beams of non-rot wood.
I created an elevated bed to sit on top of my yard and then lined the bottom of it with cardboard to kill the weeds and grass underneath. Then I filled it with enriched garden soil.
When I planted the vegetables in the bed, I tried to space them according to the specifications I found on their cards. I also buried a sprinkler hose--a special kind of hose that intentionally leaks water so that you don't have to hand-water--in the bed for ease of daily watering.
Every morning, I turn on the sprinkler hose and let the garden work its magic. I'm also making my own compost, so once it's ready, I'll add it to the soil. I can't wait to harvest my veggies!
Lessons & tips: Build your bed north-south to optimize sunlight.
