How to get a real job
How I did it: It's more useful to talk about how I didn't do it. I would get complacent having shitty days at my old job and got used to a pretty sad state of affairs. That sounds crazy, but it's pretty easy to do when one aspect of your life is fulfilling. Since my old job was usually 4 days a week, I'd tend to write off my days at work like they didn't exist, and focus completely on the days off. That was depressing in its own right, like I was living half a life and trying to cram all my errands and chores into it. I very rarely was took advantage of my days off. Occasionally I would send out a blast of resumes on job sites, but never really got down to business trying to find a job. I think this is mainly because I didn't know where to look, given my job history and so-so degree.
Lessons & tips: In the end, the best advice I can give is just constantly ask everyone you know about jobs. Make it known to everyone what you can do and that you need a job. Maybe you will get lucky as I did after some long years, or maybe very soon.
