"Silence and respite. "
How I did it: Negotiated time away with my honey.
Realized that the desert was too far away to be practical, and changed it to the beach. I was not going to be deterred!
I set the cash aside, and looked online for a vacation rental I could afford that was available at the time I had. Found a sweet little place "The Mouse Hole" in Stinson Beach and reserved it about 2 weeks ahead.
Took my dog, my laptop, and healthy food for four days.
Took my own blanket and towels, so I wouldn't worry about what might happen to theirs.
Took extra shoes (thank goodness) because I have been here for several big storms.
Checked out and ENJOYED MYSELF.
Lessons & tips: Renting a small house is no more expensive than renting a nice hotel room.
A dog can be a nice companion, keeping loneliness away but not needing to chat a lot.
"Internet access" at a rental can be sketchy. However, most public libraries have wireless you can access from the parking lot.
2 weeks was not much lead time, but this is the off season. For a popular place in the "high season," you will need a LOT more lead time. OTOH, beaches can be a bargain in the wintertime!
