How to pare down all my posessions
How I did it: We decided to move 3,000 miles... without a moving truck or trailer. Deciding that we would severely downsize our possessions and decline to rent from a moving company is saving us thousands of dollars. We are getting hand me down furniture from relative who live where we are moving to, so all it looks like we'll need to buy is a bed when we get there. Also: keep in mind that most of the furniture we had here was cheaper and breaking down anyway, so it wasn't that difficult to part with.
Small items also really take up tons of space, so we repeatedly filtered through even the smallest possessions. It's easy to justify keeping some things because they're "only this big... it doesn't take up much room"... until after you pack them all in boxes and you realize that you have twenty or more large boxes of small items.
Lessons & tips: Don't refuse to get rid of things because you spent X amount of money on them. The money's gone. If you don't like it/don't use it/don't want it, sell it, donate it, or trash it. Slow way down on buying new things.
