How to visit Neuschwanstein Castle in Germany
How I did it: My mother passed away in 2007 and encouraged me to visit my family in Europe and see a few things. My daughter and I went to Neuschwanstein and it was amazing!
Of course it was bittersweet but it was something that was worth seeing and I have wonderful memories.
Lessons & tips: There is a large hostel in Fussen to make this more affordable. Also if you are renting a car only rent a car locally when you need it. It is easier to take the train if you are vacationing in more than one country.
Get lots of sleep before you go because it is kind of a long day - lots of stairs and there are two castles on the tour. The one where King Ludwig grew up and Neuschwanstein. You cannot take photos within the castle so do purchase the book from the giftstore as it also has very good information in it. I think they may have a video but that may be better to buy - but I don't know forsure.
It was worth renting a car in Germany if you're staying in the south in Bavaria and Batten-Wurttenberg (to go to the Black Forest, Baden-Baden, etc.)
