How to go sea kayaking
How I did it: We did go to visit relatives. We tried to get in sea kayaking in Vancouver down by Granville Island, but couldn't because they were too busy with school groups in October.
Our hosts were not keen on us going sea kayaking. In the end we just took off one day to Deep Cove on the spur of the moment and did it. No phoning ahead. Nothing. We just drove out 'to take a look'. Half an hour later we were in a kayak paddling the cove.
We never did go out in open water. There were too many large boats traveling faster than they should have been and causing a lot of waves. We hugged the shore pretty tightly, but even in the cove we were having difficulty staying upright.
I found this goal scary because DH went with me in a double kayak and it was his first time in a kayak. It was hard enough keeping myself upright, let alone worrying about him twisting and turning and tipping the boat. He was intent on taking videos and photos. I found this stressful...and refused to go out into open water with him not listening to me and wanting to push the envelope. Next time I want my own boat.
Lessons & tips: Don't share your boat with someone ignorant about water and the physics of waves.
Resources: The Internet. It helped me find the Deep Cove outfit in the first place.
