"Just let go. (And remember how to brake!)"
How I did it: I went to Costa Rica to see my cousin get married. His wife's family is from San Jose, so they wanted to make sure everyone had lots of time to explore the area before the wedding.
We drove several hours to get to a resort, got suited up in harnesses, helmets, and gloves, and then took a van ride to the first platform. I was terrified, but my cousin was with me, and so was my aunt. It felt good to have their support as we went along the course.
The very last zip line was 1,000 feet long and suspended over a river. Just as I came off the platform, it started raining softly.
Lessons & tips:
- Make sure you know where you're going. It was a four-hour drive to the place we went, and while it was a great experience, it would have been better without the drive back to our hotel at the end of the night.
- Pay attention during the safety briefing and ask questions if you need help. It was fun to fly through the air, but a little stressful to keep straight and to use my hands to brake.
- My sixty-three year old aunt came along and had the time of her life. She went in tandem with one of the instructors. I have never seen her happier. If she can do it, you can do it. I promise.
