How to run a 5k
How I did it: This was my first 5k and I was very nervous at the start. I ended up starting out really fast (faster than I should have). It was a trail run, so there were some rough parts, one GIANT hill, and some nice tree-lined trails as well. I ended up finishing in 36 minutes flat. I came in 29th overall and 1st in my age division for which I won a medal! My SO also ran and he came in 7th in 27 minutes, and won first in his age division also.
I have been participating in a free running clinic for the last 8 weeks running for 30 minutes twice a week. The clinic has a "graduation" 5k coming up in 2 weeks. I am hoping to beat my 36 minute time at that event. I don't expect to get a medal though, because there will be a lot more people in that race.
Lessons & tips: Try running a few times a week to train for the 5k. Don't worry if you can't run the whole distance, it's ok to take walking breaks if you need to.
And support your fellow racers! Encourage other runners, give hi-fives, stand by the finish line after you come in and clap for everyone else...it will make a difference for them and make you happy!
