How to change my name by Cecilia

"A little too liberating, but awesome all the same."

How I did it: I decided I wanted to change my name years and years before I turned 18. I might have been 8, even, but of course I wasn't serious about it then. I'm not sure when I became serious about it, but let's say it was when I was 17, as people began using my new name then, even pre-legal change. Then, the day I turned 18 I shelled out $150 and BAM!

OK no, not really. I had to give them a better reason* first, and then wait for my change of name certificate to come in the mail... So a week later and BAM! :D


*- "personal reasons" isn't good enough

Lessons & tips: I changed my name after only exposing myself to my group of friends using it. That proved to be a mistake, because who knew it was so hard to pronounce it if you didn't have a background in the culture, gasp! After much bastardisation I changed it again, but too abruptly, and not back to my original name. You can see how this can quickly get ridiculous. I regret that and will be changing it A THIRD TIME sometime... But I am using the name everywhere before I do this to make sure it's "the one". heh.

This is especially important when you have to change it with a lot of companies. This is probably the most annoying part about it but it doesn't bother me for some reason.

I’ve always wanted to do this but have never managed to settle on a new name long enough to feel comfortable going through with it.
