"The USA is an amazing place with such diverse cultures."
How I did it: We (4 of us) hired out a Tahoe from San Francisco and drove across to NYC covering: Most of the West Coast (Santa Cruz, LA, San Diego and Tijuana) Las Vegas, Grand Canyon, Sedona, Albuquerque, San Antonio, Houston, New Orleans (for the jazz fest), Memphis, Chicago, Toronto, Niagara Falls, Boston, NYC, Philadelphia, Washington DC, then back up to NYC to finish off.
Lessons & tips:
Make sure you've got your visa waiver (ESTA) sorted.
Plan each day ahead and create a timeline of destinations. We covered ~7000 miles/ 11,000km in 5 weeks quite comfortably. We had a lot of local knowledge from friends in different areas and found Yelp incredibly helpful too.
If you're road tripping: To save money on the hire car, experiment with different drop off an pick up locations. E.g. Using Hertz UK (instead of AUS) and dropping off in Brooklyn (instead of Manhattan) slashed our rental price from ~$2500 to $1280. We also got free insurance and under 25 driver registration for free by online vouchers. Avoid hostels if you can afford it - getting in to a decent hotel late at night after a 10 hour drive is a big morale booster.
Don't hold back on anything, just do it!
Resources: Yelp - very helpful when you don't know where to go for a decent meal/ night out.
Hotels.com - Great for finding decent yet cheap hotels.
