How to take a roadtrip across the US
"What a beautifully vast and diverse country! "
How I did it: I made the journey alone (for the most part). So I had rely on (and deal with) myself a lot. I went with my gut, but used my head and heart too. Sheer will and determination, as well as a sense of humor, came in handy pretty often.
It was tough sometimes. And I wanted to give in and come home more than once. But I'm so thankful I made it all the way to the Pacific--even if I only visited the San Diego area. It was still enough to get me :)
Lessons & tips: Plan just enough, but not too much.
Take opportunities to be surprised-- often, it's worth it.
Ask advice from locals / talk to people.
(If you're solo like I was: Still keep your guard up. Trust yourself.)
Believe that you can do it.
Resources: MUSIC. MUSIC. MUSIC.
Audio books from Cracker Barrel. ("purchase" from one, listen, return to any nation-wide, get back difference from rental rate)
Atlas, roadsigns, GPS (for specific places), GoogleMaps
Hotel coupon books (visitor centers, gas stations, etc.)
Hostels, Airbnb.com
Travel magazines, Internet
