"Feel like I am now unplugged from The Matrix."
How I did it: Realized I didn't need or want facebook since it's a huge waste of time and I felt bad about comparing myself to others a lot - so why have that negative force in my life?
Anyway the reasons are below & this is the email I sent out to everybody in relation to it. Enjoy:
I am writing this to let you know that I am permanently deleting - not just deactivating - my Facebook account.
So you won't see me on the site anymore in 2 weeks (effective May 29th) which is how long it takes to be removed in full from the site; please note that I am not defriending you so don't think it's anything personal (besides if it were, I wouldn't have added you to this email list to let you know). I've saved my photos from there so I got everything I need from the site.
You can always use the phone, texts and email if you really need to reach me.
Since I know I'll probably get a lot of questions as to why I'm doing this, there are many but basically it comes down to:
1) I don't like what Facebook has become or what it stands for anymore,
2) It's a MASSIVE time suck for me and a huge waste of time and killer of productivity
3) I don't use it that often in terms of tags, posts, photos, etc.
4) There's a lot of people I don't know, don't want to know and don't care about who follow me and request me
5) It's a big invasion of privacy
6) Honestly, it's kind of boring
7) Trying to lead a regular life is challenging enough as it is as well as having to lead an online life
8) I don't like all the ads and being marketed to 24/7 - I get enough of that in LA as it is
9) The idea of this giant party online where everyone has fun all the time and pressure to top & impress each other shamelessly is annoying and leads to feelings that you're not doing enough with life, or hanging with the wrong crowd, etc. - Warhol was right
10) No, I don't care what you had for breakfast (but I'm still your friend!)
BONUS: I get to say damn the man and have a great conversation starter at parties. Also, what the hell will there be left to talk about at any high school or college reunions, etc.?
Anyway just thought you should know since you're my friends and family. Keep in touch old school!
Lessons & tips: Tell everyone via email so they don't get offended when you're off
Save all your photos to your hard drive
Unlink every app, website, etc that you have which is linked to facebook and would do an autologin on your behalf.
Most importantly, DO NOT LOG INTO FACEBOOK AT ALL FOR 14 DAYS and it will be deleted permanently. In fact, don't even look at facebook related pages just to be safe. They do try to guilt trip you and they make it very hard to get out of the system once you're in it.
Recommend that you clear out your cache asap so as to avoid potentially logging in.
Good luck!
