How to complete the New York marathon
How I did it: I got my place back in 2006 and it took me 2.5 years to reach a point where I could take advantage of it.
I found an achievable training plan online, searching until I found one that fitted in with my lifestyle. Although I chose one with only 3 runs a week I still didn't make all those runs but I didn't give myself a hard time I simply moved my thinking on to the next one.
I trained by myself, ran without a walkman or music. At times the long runs became mind breakingly boring but I reaped the benefits when it got to the marathon itself as the crowds and the atmosphere had a massive effect on me.
For the race itself I found a pace group to run with and stuck with them. This enabled me to come in at my desired time of just under 5 hours.
If you are even thinking a little about it take my advice and just do it!!!!
Lessons & tips: Don't give up. Don't let negative thinking get in your way whatever blips hit your training programme. And the best advice I got from a friend was to savour the finish because you have earned every cheer and every bit of applause that is going!
Resources: Runners World online has excellent resources that cover nearly all abilities. It doesn't matter at what level you are starting - there will be a plan for you.
