How I did it: I discovered I had omitted about 20K of earnings by accident from my tax return.  So I went to H and R block, they helped me file an amended return.  

I had to pay more, but in the end I still had a small refund from the Government.  (I had already recieved the refund, sooo).

 I signed the forms and sent it all off by registered letter to the IRS.

Lessons & tips: While I could have done this alone, I used H and R block.  The tax preparer was expensive, but he was able to help me understand exactly what I had done, how to fix it, and then also gave me an idea of what to expect next form the IRS.  Just as he said...I got a letter in just telling me I did not owe any interest...though if I had waited, i would have owed more interest.  and the IRS would have probably billed me for my error.  So, if you, like me, are not that confident with tax preparation, just use a professional.  it was well worth the cash.
