How I did it: My friend came to Chicago for a job interview, I rode in her car. I gave away my things that wouldn't fit in a suitcase (except my violin).

Stayed in a youth hostel for 4 days until I found an apartment, found a job in the neighborhood a few blocks from my house.

Lessons & tips: Having a job already makes it easier.
