How to play with my band on the Radio by Sonia

"Scary, but awesome!"

How I did it: After five years of playing music in Minneapolis, my new band got some attention online and the University's radio station contacted us to ask us to play their local show. We had never played live together, so it was terrifying! Playing to a few people in a room while and an otherwise unseen audience is a very nerve-wracking experience - every flaw can be heard with perfect clarity! I wouldn't say we "nailed it," but we did a good job. I'm super proud and excited to keep playing.

Lessons & tips: Five or six years ago, I never would have thought I could sing in front of people, much less sing into a microphone with the knowledge that the entire city could potentially be hearing my voice! But I've learned that life isn't about being comfortable. All the most amazing things I've learned and done have happened when I'm way outside of my comfort zone. Don't be afraid to fail, to panic, to sweat, to break down a little. If you want to do something, don't let fear prevent you.

That’s awesome. You’re 100% right about pushing past the anxiety—and the more often you do it, the easier it gets.

Just out of curiosity, how is it that your band has never played live together? Do you just record?

Hey! Sorry – I hadn’t seen your comment until now. Our band had just been practicing and getting a set together, and it just so happened that our first “gig” was playing on the radio. We had a little buzz based on some of the other projects we’d worked with.

Another word of advice- don’t be afraid to treat your band like a big deal. Go out there and reach for shows you think you can’t get, radio play you think you’re “too small” for…. It works sometimes!
