How to move across the country
"Got rid of our stuff and took the train to Portland, sight unseen, no jobs, no place to stay"
How I did it: It has been fantastic and terrifying, Dickensianly the best of times and the worst of times. We have eventually sorted out the housing, though it was hostels, hotels, and short leases for a while. We don't have jobs, though, so are relying on savings still.
Lessons & tips: Don't bring more stuff than you, personally, are willing to carry. We probably moved our stuff 16 times, and you decide real quick that it's not worth hauling junk.
Resources: Amtrak, ZipCar, and craigslist. Be sure to consider shared housing: it's cheaper and there are many more listings (under Rooms). Also, if you don't have a job, many places won't rent to you even if you can pay the full lease up front. Real humans, however, are more flexible.
