How to be a winner at NaNoWriMo
"Tiring but wholly satisfying!"
How I did it: Word Wars. :)
Word wars are your friend. Word wars give you a reason to write more, faster, and with no regard for spelling, punctuation or grammar.
I also had a better reason, which is that another writer from my region beat me by about seventeen hours last year, so I had to beat him this year. At the time of writing, I have written 2.75 times as much as him, so I am really happy about that.
Music is good. If you have a good playlist, it can not only chill you out, but actually help to shape the flow of your novel. I listened to very little music this year, but it helped last year, so I thought I'd mention it.
The West Wing has been on my DVD player most nights, because my hubby just got the complete box-set, so I didn't feel so bad about staying up writing until 4/5/6 in the morning!
Lessons & tips: Don't forget to sleep! Yes. that 50K word count and green winner bar are very alluring, but surviving on only an hour of sleep per night will take it's toll. I now have flu, and feel terrible, but I can't sleep properly because my body clock's out of sync.
Resources: lulu.com - I know it's a shameless plug, but I have my novel published (already) on Lulu, which you can buy now by going here. I already had some stuff available there, bu knowing that I could publish my novel there really spurred me on
