How to my Next Holiday...Cycling in WA in May 2011

How I did it: I flew to Darwin, then headed south to Katherine, turned west towards Kununurra where there was a fork in teh road. I took the southern fork westwards and came back east on the northern fork. Not wanting to cover the same ground i organised a lift back form K to almost in Darwin where i got dropped off so i could do a bit in a national park before heading back to Darwin.
Lessons & tips: Feel free to ask for advice if you need it. i've got too much else to do right now.
But from meeting foreign travellers who'd made this mistake - make sure check the right time of year to do this and the wind direction. You don't want to be riding east along the victoria highway in our southern winter and you won't want to be anywhere in this part of the world in our summer. So perth to Darwin is a bad idea really. Travel west.
The main things there of interest in the Kimberleys are: gravel road riding, lots of camping, aboriginal contemporary art and aboriginal rock art, gorges. The Bungle Bungles is an absolute highlihgt of the area. There are not many local poeple about but there are many other australians travelling this route at this time of year who can be very helpful.
Camping wherever you feel like it basically and if the water is flowing, its most likely safe to drink so you can ignore most of the warning signs about water but you can ask the people around if there is a known problem just to be sure or in case of new developments. But i always drink the water regardless of these stupid signs which are there to protect the owners and govt from insurance issues mainly.
Resources: if you are foreign, a guidebook maybe handy but i didn't need one. Just talk to people to find out what you need to know along the way. There are lots of website about the kimberleys. YOu can write to national parks western australia for more detailed info on the parks.
