Travelling can truly open you’re eyes and add gratitude to your life.
How I did it: Through a study abroad program at Santa Clara University. FAVL: Friends of African Village Libraries has an internship program where you can go spend time volunteering in rural village libraries interacting with kids who are learning French. I lived there for 4 months and it was the most challenging and humbling experience of my life. The people there are so generous, loving and genuine unlike any other group of people I've ever met.
Lessons & tips: Don't go alone. Find a friend who speaks French (if you don't) and get to know people once you're there. There aren't really any tourism groups that will show you the best of Burkina Faso. You've got to get out there and start talking to strangers. Soon enough, you will have lots of friends!
Talk to people, don't judge them and do not let your ego and "norms" get in the way of what really matters in life. Yes, people will be walking around in tattered clothes, little kids will have inflated stomachs and dinner will be scarce but they understand love like no one else!
