How I did it: I could say that it took me a couple of months to learn to play the bass guitar, but it's a never-ending process. Only recently have I started learning songs by ear or slapping the bass and I can definately say that I'm a bassist now. Next I need to learn to slap properly, maybe learn the guitar as well (I've started playing a little on a friend's guitar) and then who knows. This was just the first step.

Lessons & tips:

• patience and persistance is the key, you need to practice daily for months before you get any good
• getting classes is always good, but if you don't have the money, then the website studybass.com is a must. It's completely free and great for someone who never held a bass in his/her hands
• join a band as soon as possible, you'll progress much faster by playing with other people
