How I did it: About 6 months before I bought my house, I started paying super close attention to my credit and started a Total Money Makeover.  By the time I was ready to look, my credit was decent enough to get a mortgage.  I got pre-approved and then was lucky enough to find a foreclosure that I fell in love with.  It felt like home the moment I found it.  A bidding war and lots of issues later, it's mine and I love it!

Lessons & tips: Expect things to go wrong.  My offer was accepted in August but I didn't close until October.  I had planned a party for Halloween when I first got the house and almost didn't get to have it!  Also, even if you do 0 down, make sure you have at least $2000 put away for other stuff.
