How I did it: I knew some people in a band and they said they needed a keyboardist.  I asked to join and it ended up being a good fit.  I used to play the piano as a kid and even though I'm not that good at it, I knew that I knew enough to improvise.  Also I'd been in a band previously playing drums, which I learned by taking lessons. 

Lessons & tips: You always get better at your instrument after joining the band, due to practicing and the fear of playing in front of others.  Also playing in a band is not that glamorous so it's mostly about playing with a group of people that you enjoy making music with.
