How to plan trip to catskill mountains
"Rainy weekend, but nice outing from the city"
How I did it: I used the state parks website and booked a campsite near the Catskills. Because of the hurricane the week before, the parks people closed down the campsite I had initially picked out (it was in the mountains) and settled for one 20 miles away.
We went all the way to Newark to rent a car I had a deal for (through hotwire) for $150 for 3 days!! (can you believe it) Of course, this meant we had to go from nyc to Newark, which (train+ air rail +subway) was costly, but still better than the $500+ rate other car dealerships were offering.
It rained a bit and thundered overhead in the night, but all in all it was a great trip, and a necessary escape from the city life.
Lessons & tips: prepare for the weather, get great camping foods (peanut butter, marshmellows, etc), pick a location near hiking, and large expanses of green areas
