"I have the best and most thoughtful friends one could ever ask for."
How I did it: The last train for Burritoville leaves at sunset. I asked the last question I will ever ask: Before sunset, will you send me a picture of something unforgettable or beloved? I put on a party dress to wait.
She said Here are two things in a picture for you. One is an orchid whose flowers have the scent of lemon and cream. The other is of a plaintive sound that can be heard across two miles.
I was not disappointed, but it was time to leave. I packed a small bag with a sweater and a scarf and pencils and I placed the sound on top of it, near the zipper.
Boarding a train always slightly sad. At the last minute, I took out white, green and yellow pencils and quickly sketched the orchid on my hat. I hoped the scent of lemon and cream would follow. I am not bad at sketching. I am also not bad at waiting.
Thank you to all who made my birthdaypoloooooza unforgettably wonderful, tidy (I put my pencils back forthwith) and circumspect (I do not know any other way to live). Many many thanks to wren for starting this goal.
The train set out at civil twilight on the dot. I waved at no-one in particular and sat back in my seat thinking of
pulled pork
chicken
bbq sauce
rice with lime and cilantro
red salsa
shreddy cheese
refried beans, but not too much
burrito sauce
guac-a-mole
all wrapped snugly in a tortilla, the way Mr. Sunshine taught me.
I have one for you in the freezer, he said. Even though now you know how to roll your own.
Yes indeed, I said. I admit it. I like invitations.
