"Take it one day at a time (and distract thyself)!"
How I did it: Clarifying my reasons for doing the program. Have a good reason that will keep you going as a runner! Mine was that I needed exercise that could do a lot in a short period of time. Eventually I found myself not wanting to walk anymore, but wanting to run. It was a struggle, especially around the middle of the program. I feel great now, my legs are totally toned, and my anxiety is much lower after a good run. I'm excited to sign up for my first 5k, and who knows where I will go from there.
Lessons & tips:
- Focus on anything BUT how long you have been running. I know at first there are many quick intervals, so try to make it as automated as possible (for example downloading an app, or making a playlist that will alert you to start/stop running). Running is largely a mental game, and being distracted helps you get through the workout faster.
- Good music. I am a fan of indie music, but NOT when running. I tend to listen to rap/r&b because for some reason it pumps me up more. Listen to whatever pumps you up. Again, it's the mental aspect!
- Record your progress here! 43T is a very supportive place, and users with this goal in particular are more willing to help one another.
- STRETCH whenever possible. It's a cliche for a reason
- Hydrate. Try strictly drinking water all day (I do coffee, but try to drink more water to compensate), and it will be much easier to finish your runs.
- Give yourself time between eating and running. I personally need at least an hour, otherwise I find it hard to continue.
Resources:
- Running shoes- if they are too old try and get a new pair if possible because otherwise your joints will hurt LOTS and it will be hard to want to move forward with the program.
- Ipod nano on a wristband
