How to watch less tv
"I found myself surviving without the background noise of television attempting to distract me from my work."
How I did it: The simplest way I can say is that I went to college. The TV programs I found that I wanted to watch the most, I purchased through iTunes. Not Hulu, but rather iTunes so I have to spend my own money to see them. This helped discourage me from getting too many programs and spending too much time watching them. Plus, as I could subscribe to only my top favorite shows due to how strict my budget was, I found myself with more free time to get work done.
I also sought out locations on campus that had no TVs. Some of the study lounges had no television at all while the radio station I worked on had a TV that was quite uncomfortable to get turned on, so that helped keep it off. I just avoided television as much as possible.
Lessons & tips: Don't give in. If you really want to watch that one show you like, purchase it from iTunes. As it's coming out of your wallet, you are less likely to watch a ton of shows that don't matter as much.
