How to get to know myself
"You would take time to get to know a potential friend - why not yourself?"
How I did it: I realized recently that I had no idea what I really liked, what I really thought about various things, and what I really stood for. That's a scary thing, when you are a parent. How can you set a good example, teach children various things, when you're not even sure what you think or like?
So...I decided to use various techniques to discover more about myself. I wrote on this subject in a journal. I've used 43 Things in some respects - see my goal on living like the person I always wanted to be in 2011. I also have seen a therapist in an effort to find out who I am and also to get rid of some of my baggage.
Lessons & tips:
- Lists can help - list movies you like, colors, scents, tastes, foods, actors/actresses, genres of movies or books and so on
- Write in a journal. Ask yourself questions, think about it for a little while, and then write without stopping.
- Think about things that bother you. Why do they bother you? Is there something in you that it grates on? Does it remind you of a trait in yourself?
- Ask your friends what they think your strong suits are. Do you agree? What do YOU think you are good at?
- Take a look at flaws too. It really can be a good, healthy thing to look at areas within yourself that need improvement - then take a small step toward that goal.
Resources:
- Books on keeping a journal (_Journal to the Self_ by Kathleen Adams is wonderful)
- The internet can be a source of good ideas on keeping a journal
- Good, trusted, close friends
