"Volunteering gave me experience, connections, and direction in what I wanted from my work."
How I did it:
After researching organizations I respected, I made a point of creating relationships with them through volunteering. I have gained experience, connections, and respect, and consequentially, have been offered positions based on what I was willing to do for free. I now have a position that takes advantage of my strengths and my interests, and gives me an opportunity to continue to develop in these areas.
Lessons & tips: Don't let money and benefits packages define the jobs you take. Be honest with yourself about the lifestyle you want. I prefer to work fewer hours, and am willing to sacrifice some expenses for this luxury. This allows me time at home to pursue my other interests, and keeps me from feeling burned out about work.
Additionally, indirect paths can lead you towards what you really want. I never thought I would work in healthcare, but my design background and willingness to learn, allows me to be productive in an environment where my skills are really needed.
Resources: I served two years as an AmeriCorps volunteer, case managing low-income patients. I enjoy computers, and have become tech savvy, just by doing research on my own time. Although, I am not trained in programming, I have learned how to utilize free tools through forums, so I can perform functions that many only learn through very specific schooling.
