How to register as a professional scientist
"It is quite a job, but"
How I did it:
- I discovered that I could register as professional scientist, and that it is a prerequisite to doing scientific consultation work.
- I went to the website, and downloaded all the forms and the information.
- I discovered that I needed two references of superiors, so I contacted two people to ask if they would be willing to act as references to me, and fill in the report.
- I collected all the documentation.
- I wrote a job experience report.
- I paid the money into SARNAP's bank account.
- I waited for the reference letters to appear.
- Very carefully I went through the documents checklist, to make sure I had all the required documentation.
- I made a pile of the documentation, and sealed it in an envelope.
- I drove to the headquarters of the Council for Geosciences to submit my application.
- The next day I phoned to make sure that my application had been received.
- I enquired ahout when I could expect a response.
- I waited patiently.
- When the email arrived I was quietly happy, and emailed some friends to tell them.
Lessons & tips: Start early: it's a long process, and there's a lot of documentation you need to provide. If you can, register as a candidate soon after you have graduated, so that you can get registered as soon as possible.
