How I did it: We already had an external hard drive, and we have a wireless network connecting my laptop with the main computer, so it was actually pretty easy to move the pictures. It was just a bit time-consuming because if I moved more than about 500 at a time, iPhoto would stop responding. I moved thousands and thousands of pictures, and then deleted them from my laptop. My laptop is running decidedly faster now. I'll have to do this again periodically, but I want access to some of the pictures to use for painting, so for now I think two years of photos on my laptop is a reasonable amount.
