How to be a vegetarian
"YES!"
How I did it: First of all, I'll share that I'm a vegetarian for 4.5 years now and I couldn't imagine eating any animal again; and also I had no health issues (regarding the fact many claim vegetarianism is unhealthy).
Although I see many people decide to be vegetarians and than cut back on different types of meat slowly, I became a vegetarian in one night. What influenced it? Realizing the way animals that are to be eaten live and die, the fact that every creature wants to live no matter how "inferior" humans think they are and the fact they all animals have unique and beautiful personalities, lives and emotions. Humans don't need meat to survive, it's a kill so that they can ENJOY the taste. But I guess for many, and myself back than, it might not be enough to really stop. What got me over the edge was the sight (this is really disgusting, but happens sometimes) of my hamster eating her newborn babies (I'll just say that it was very graphic). After that, together with the thought of that happening to all those chickens/cows/pigs/etc. and the horror they feel, I just felt disgusted of very thought of tasting meat.
Since then I feel morally "clean" and incredibly happy with myself. Although I'm not a person who runs around "attacking" people who eat meat and patronizing them, I feel like my choice has changed the world a bit, and hope that more will make that decision in life.
And what to eat? There are so many delightful things! Almost everything the meat has to "offer" you can supplement with cheese, soy, beans, eggs (although I'm pretty sure I'll stop eating those too someday), mushrooms etc. Think of different pastas, salads, soy-burgers or soy-based meals, tofu meals (bare in mind that tofu needs a "strong" spice to make a tasty meal, like soy sauce etc), vegetable meals, mushrooms, potato-based meals, pizzas... Think of all those different cheeses you can use in all sorts of meals! Look up some recipes with ingredients you prefer and experiment. (I'm saying this because of the fact many people claim vegetarian meals are just salads and blank/tasteless since there is no meat to give it flavor (omg))
You wouldn't want yourself or your loved ones to be killed to become somebody's food, so why do it to anyone else? So, go for it and be the change in the world! I guarantee you'll feel happier and more fulfilled as a person. :D
Lessons & tips:
- Watch out when eating out. Many things you wouldn't imagine are made with ingredients that contain "dead animals" (for example - I saw a "vegetarian" pizza that has bacon on it, and fast-food pancakes made on pig fat). So, always be wary, it doesn't hurt to ask. :)
- Learn to cook (if you already don't)! And look up on the internet for interesting meals you can make. Or just experiment in kitchen to make your meals delicious. Also, learn to use spices, they definitely give new, tasty meaning even to the simplest dishes.
Resources: My Dad, for being a great, open-minded cook.
