How to swim 700m in 14 minutes
How I did it: I made this goal last year, originally because I wanted to make the guard team at my University. I knew I had done 600m in 14 minutes at one point, because that had been the standard at my pool, but that was years ago and I had never tried 700m.
At the time when I was applying for the job, I had 2 weeks to get in shape to do the time, and I just didn't have enough time or motivation to do it. Seemed pretty far off, so I didn't even go for the tryout.
And now a year and a few months later, I did it. I don't know whether I could have done it if I really pushed myself earlier, but I've done it twice in a week (the first time just to see if I could and I did!) which is a really awesome feeling. My sister has a free pass to the pool, which is what motivated me to go - I mean its free and I have time. How can I not?
I don't really know if I'm in better shape or not, but this suggests yes. I've been off work for a month now, and in that time I've tried to be healthier. I can't say that I do something active every day, but usually at least 3 times a week I suppose. And generally I've been trying to eat healthier options and portions... but I still enjoy a good cupcake and occasional bowl of ice cream. However, I don't eat after 8pm (with a few exceptions such as wine and cheese night), and I've been trying to drink mostly water after 8 and more water in general.
I guess I'm definitely in better shape now than I was in University. Then I was only playing intramural hockey for 40minutes once a week. Now I'm still playing pick up hockey once a week, but it's 90 minutes and there are fewer subs. I also try to jog/swim/rollerblade on occasion and last week I even did Zumba with my mom.
Feels good, but wasn't terribly hard. It makes me wonder what I could do if I really put my mind to it and got on a training schedule.
