"a likely waste of money if you dont know what you are doing"
How I did it: the perfect shoe does not exist. have decided to give up searching.
Also, since i like nice shoes, its expensive. Then the worst are shoes that squeak or degrade or are too special to be worn or take too much care or wreck in the rain.
At the time I made this goal, I did enjoy the process and in many ways I still do. I will inevitably buy more shoes however, its not a mission simply to own a multitude of shoes that I wont use.
The goal now is simply to buy excellent shoes that make a statement but ones that are only just spectacular enough to actually do the job.
Basically, I've fallen in love with practical shoes. Sad, I know. but in many ways I"m happier and a wiser consumer.
Lessons & tips: Avoid plastic shoes. Go with full leather.
Avoid super-high stilettos
Storing is a nightmare, I have two full closets. Some are brand new in the box and unworn as they are too special. I had to give away one which went out of style while still in tissue paper. That was harsh.
Always store in clear pastic rubbermaid. Make sure its stackale and that you remove the sticker so you can see everything in the box.
Clean and maintain your shoes. Understand the materials used. Mend and repair those suckers. Meaning replace a sole, a heel or cut a tall boot down to an anckle boot. you can cut heels shorter (so dont go run otu and buy a new one when u only need to mend). your shoe repair man is worth his weight in gold.
Also there is no excuse for dry, cracked, dirty shoes. none. A scuff is one thing but plain old dirt is another. always keep them looking shiny, wash the laces and scrape out stones
Walk carefully in pointy shoes.
Wear insoles, replace insoles as necessary
Resources: learn about shoe materials. REFUSE to buy shoes you know to be inferior quality. they will pinch and bunions/corns are heartbreaking!
