How I did it: I just googled 'how to speed up macbook pro' - then I did about half a dozen things which came up.
The biggest thing that sped things up was accessing the 'Application Monitor' and stopping the processes that were taking up the most CPU.
I also realised I was critically close to hard-drive capacity, so I used this excellent app -
Disk Inventory X
Which shows you were all the big files taking up all the space. I realised I had only half a dozen matroshka video files that were taking bulk space (40 gig). Very easily to delete.
Now the computer is working way faster
