How to run a 5k
"proud of myself"
How I did it: Well I didn't actually do any proper training. I went jogging a few times with my friends over summer and then with my mum at the beginning of September. Then in the hype me and my mum entered for the Santa Dash, which was on December 4th. I was really busy, it was cold and it got dark early so I didn't want to go by myself so I didn't. Then on the day I had a cold which made it twice as bad.
However, I decided I was going to run the entire thing and I reminded myself that I had run 5k on the treadmill and cross trainer several times before (over the summer and it doesn't feel like you have gone far because you don't see anything).
I just started with a slow but steady pace and just concentrated on not stopping. I did it in about 35 minutes and my mum did it in 40, which I think is ok with a cold and virtually no training. I am excited to do another one with training and see what time I can actually do.
Lessons & tips: Train!
Wear socks for running (I wore some brand new christmas socks because we were dressed as father christmas' and they were too thick and gave me blisters :( )
Get there early so you can get a spot at the start line
Practise a few hills (the route might not seem like it has hills in, but after a while you can feel the incline!)
Get a good pair of trainers (I had shin splints a few years ago and another overenthusiastic bout of jogging whilst wearing rubbish trainers was agonising)
