How to get passport
"For me, more complicated than I expected."
How I did it: For most people, it's as easy as making an appointment at a passport application office and following the directions so you bring everything you need.
Lessons & tips:
- Be sure to show up early for your passport appointment - another woman was turned away as I arrived because she was late and the scheduling was rigid.
- You may hit snags in the process, as I did, so apply for a passport months in advance. You don't want to have to reschedule a vacation.
- If your passport is delayed, don't give up. I received a letter that meant I had to get a legal name change before my application could be accepted. I thought the process would take a month at least, but I got the legal change within a week.
Resources:
- Find out where to apply.
- Know what to bring.
